When someone searches for "dentist near me" or "CA in Andheri", the first thing they usually see isn't a list of websites. It's a map with three businesses pinned on it. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, a free tool that most small businesses either haven't set up or set up once and forgot. Done properly, it's one of the highest-return hours you can spend on local visibility.

What Google Business Profile actually is

It's your business's listing on Google Search and Google Maps: name, address or service area, phone number, hours, photos, reviews and a link to your website. It's free, it's controlled by you once verified, and for local searches it often appears above the regular search results.

Before you start: check eligibility

Your business needs to deal with customers in person, either at a location they can visit or by travelling to them. Purely online businesses aren't eligible. You'll also need an address you genuinely operate from; virtual offices and mailbox addresses generally aren't allowed and can get a listing suspended.

Step 1: Create or claim your profile

Go to Google's Business Profile page and sign in with a Google account the business will keep long-term, ideally not a personal account belonging to one employee. Search for your business first: a listing may already exist, created automatically or by a customer. If it does, claim it rather than creating a duplicate.

Step 2: Choose the right category

Your primary category has a big influence on which searches you appear for. Pick the most specific one that describes your core business, for example "Dental clinic" rather than "Doctor". You can add secondary categories for other services, but keep them genuinely relevant.

Step 3: Location or service area

If customers visit you, enter your exact address and check the map pin sits on your building. If you travel to customers, like plumbers, tutors or home services, set a service area and hide your address. If you do both, you can show the address and add service areas too.

Step 4: Verify the listing

Google needs to confirm you're the real owner before the profile goes fully live. Depending on your business, it may offer options such as a phone or text code, email, a short video recording showing your premises and signage, or a postcard to your address. Follow whichever methods are offered to you; verification can take anywhere from minutes to a couple of weeks.

Step 5: Complete every section

Step 6: Add real photos

Upload your logo, a cover photo, and real pictures of your storefront from the street, the inside, your team and your work. Customers use the storefront photo to recognise you on arrival. Avoid stock images; they add nothing and can look evasive.

Step 7: Build a steady flow of genuine reviews

Reviews influence both rankings and whether people choose you. Ask satisfied customers directly, and make it easy by sharing your review link on WhatsApp or printing a QR code at the counter. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them; it violates Google's policies and can get reviews removed or the profile restricted.

Consistency matters more than perfection: the same name, address and phone number on your profile, your website and every directory you appear in.

Step 8: Keep it alive

Post updates, offers or new photos every few weeks, update hours before holidays, and check the profile monthly. Anyone can suggest edits to a public listing, so make sure nobody has changed your details without you noticing.

How your website fits in

Your profile and your website support each other. Google cross-checks the details, so your website should show the same name, address and phone number, ideally with an embedded map and a page for each main service. A fast, mobile-friendly site also turns profile clicks into actual enquiries, because that's where people go to decide.

Set up properly, Google Business Profile won't replace a website or SEO, but it puts your business on the map, quite literally, for the customers searching closest to you.
